Tate Smith, Conservation Director

As the Conservation Director, Tate manages the land trust’s conservation programs, specifically shepherding conservation easement acquisition projects from initial proposal to final closing. Tate has a background in land management, having spent most of his career managing 3.9 million acres of Wyoming state trust land.

Tate spent most of his childhood moving around the country while his father was in the Army. After retiring from military service, his parents bought a small ranch in southeast Colorado where Tate developed a deep passion for agriculture and land management.  After attending the University of Wyoming, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Rangeland Ecology and Watershed Management, he called the cowboy state his forever home. Tate is a dedicated family man. He enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters getting outdoors and taking advantage of the opportunities Wyoming’s natural resources have to offer.
